NAP’s Stigma Busters Omaha
The Stigma Busters in Omaha is a youth lead program that aims at giving youth ages 15-24 not only the tools to create a new narrative on reproductive health, but the experience to connect and educate their own community. It’s no secret that younger members of our society haven’t been offered a proper seat at the table to discuss their own sexual health and education, and work is needed to complete this perspective.
The Stigma Busters goal is to break the stigma with reproductive rights and sexual health to ensure a platform for complete and affirming health care. Research shows when youth get comprehensive and honest information, they have the tools to make decisions that are best for them and their health. Stigma also keeps many students and youth shy or reluctant to have these conversations with other adults or mentors. A way we are targeting this issue is by having their peers help in reaching those students.
After joining Stigma Busters, a Student will be a part of educating and being a resource for other students. Participation includes:
- Discussion zooms where we go over a sexual health topic each month.
- Social Media take overs and Education posts (Facebook and Instagram influencing)
- Help organizing and running youth led events for education and engagement
- Assisting in programing and ownership of outreach efforts
Participation will be compensated with a visa gift card after the end of each quarter, volunteer hours, a professional reference for resumes, and experience with community outreach.
