Nebraska AIDS Project is saddened by the passing of Gary West, a longtime volunteer, supporter, and fundraiser whose impact on our community will be felt for years to come.

Gary dedicated much of his life to serving others. He was deeply involved with the Imperial Court of Nebraska (ICON), helping lead fundraising efforts that supported the LGBTQ+ community and organizations like NAP. As a five-time Emperor, as well as a board member and Board President, Gary played an important role in raising more than $1 million for his community over the years.

Throughout his life, he found creative ways to bring people together while supporting causes he cared about. Before his involvement with ICON, Gary was a member of the Meatpackers, a burlesque performance group that combined entertainment with fundraising and community service.

Many people knew Gary through his work at NAP's Wellness Center at 40th and Dodge, where he served as the cook and prepared lunch for clients and staff five days a week. He also hosted numerous parties supporting our Night of a Thousand Stars gala. Even after his time at NAP, Gary continued serving community members through the Friday lunch program at Metropolitan Community Church, volunteering until just two weeks before his passing.

We are grateful for Gary's many contributions to NAP and to the broader community. Our thoughts are with Gary's partner, family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Thank you, Gary. You will be missed.
